Raleigh's Best-Kept Underground Secret Awaits

A private cocktail club beneath Crawford & Son, where inventive drinks and intimate atmosphere define every visit.

About Us

A stylish bar interior featuring drinks and cozy seating.

Some bars you find on a map. Sous Terre you earn. Tucked below Crawford & Son on North Person Street in Raleigh's Oakwood neighborhood, this underground cocktail club operates on its own terms, open only five evenings a week to those who know the way in.

Beverage Director Jordan Joseph leads a bar program built around both the classics and the genuinely unexpected. The cocktail list is a living document of craft, drawing on fine spirits and creative combinations that reward the curious drinker. A curated selection of beer and wine rounds out the menu for guests who prefer something beyond the shaker.

This is Chef Scott Crawford's private project, and it carries that same attention to detail that defines his restaurants above. The underground setting is not a gimmick. It is a genuine commitment to atmosphere, to the idea that a great drink tastes better when the room around you earns it.

What We Offer

Sous Terre offers two distinct experiences, each shaped by the same exacting standard.

The cocktail bar is the heart of the operation. Classic builds sit alongside inventive originals, and the bar team moves with the kind of quiet confidence that comes from deep knowledge. Whether you settle in for one carefully chosen drink or work through the full menu across an evening, every glass is given the same care. A curated beer and wine list provides excellent alternatives for guests exploring beyond cocktails.

For private events, Sous Terre transforms into something rarer still. The underground space offers a setting that is nearly impossible to replicate, and the team has a proven track record of executing milestone celebrations with precision. From specialty cocktail menus to every logistical detail, the staff works closely with hosts to build an event that fits the occasion.

Why Choose Us

An underground cocktail club with a genuine speakeasy atmosphere that guests consistently call one of Raleigh's most memorable bar experiences.

Beverage Director Jordan Joseph leads a cocktail program that balances classic technique with genuinely creative, inventive builds.

Part of Chef Scott Crawford's acclaimed Oakwood restaurant group, bringing the same culinary rigor to the bar as to the kitchen.

Private event hosting with hands-on staff coordination, proven across milestone celebrations including birthdays and corporate gatherings.

A curated beer and wine list alongside the full cocktail menu, giving every guest a compelling option at every price point.

Rated 4.6 out of 5 stars by Raleigh guests who praise the atmosphere, the cocktails, and the staff by name.

"Our waitress at Crawford & Son led us here after dinner, which was a fun experience and definitely achieved that ‘speakeasy’ vibe. The cocktail menu was inventive and I liked my Tom Kha Margarita - not too sweet and the curry flavor was subtle but present. I like my cocktails a tad bit funkier but there were lots of interesting options on the menu. Very cool spot!"

"*KEYNOTE* A key from Crawford & Sons upstairs is required. We were told you either buy one or receive one complimentary while dining there. Fortunately, a key holder let us in after seeing us struggle with the locked door 😅 After finally gaining entry downstairs, you'll enter a dimly lit speakeasy with about 10 seats at the bar top and what felt like 4 tables. Size and limited seating being the first noticeable factor (which somewhat explains the exclusivity). Some folks may need their phone to read the menus if you're not already seated at a table equipped with a little light. We had to wait about 10 minutes for a table to open up and an additional 5 to receive our drinks. No one took our order so I held down the table while my fiance ordered at the bar... this kinda led to a bummer. Unfortunately, the seating near us was cramped between other patrons. My fiance was trying to maneuver around others into the bench side seating and accidentally nudge the table spilling a bit of her brim-filled cocktail. Spilling some of a $19 is never fun and we just asked the bar for a damp rag to clean it up - no inquiry or offer to help but at least I got the towel. We ordered the Tom Kha Margarita / $16 - Altos Blanco Tequila, Green Curry, Ginger, Togarashi salted rim & the Thai Tea Fizz / $19 Ford's, Thai Tea, Cream, Lemon, and Egg White I am a sucker for SE Asian inspired cocktails which both scratched the itch. The Tom Kha Marg had the presence of green curry but wasn't overpowering. The Thai Tea Fizz will be a perfect for anyone who enjoys Thai Tea as is. Somewhat thick, sweet, and foamy from the egg white. There's plenty to enjoy about Sous Terre's elevated SE Asian twist on classic cocktails. I'm not certain how much is costs to purchase a key, but aside from the key and/or JC&S meal: $19 a drink (plus 20% tip - $23) is a rather steep price for the experience - especially with setting, atmosphere, and service all considered."

"With the help of Alexander and Jordan, we pulled off an epic surprise party for my husband’s 40th birthday this weekend. Accommodating at every step and with every detail, from specialty cocktails named after my husband with some of his favorite profiles, to the fantastic play list, Alexander and Sous Terre delivered a party beyond my expectations. We brought in several dozen doughnuts from across the street and it was super simple to coordinate with bringing in snacks. If you’re considering an intimate and super fun space for drinks, Sous Terre is an excellent choice."

"Great cocktails and cool bartenders. I’m finding that good cocktails don’t come cheap; this place is pricey! It’s also super dark which made it a little difficult to read the menu. Will definitely be back when celebrating!"

"Perfectly made classics in a dark, sexy space. Perfect for dinner before or after dinner at one of the other Crawford concepts upstairs. Key is required for entry and can be purchased at either Crawford and Son or Jolie."
